Looking for a startup idea? Here's a problem to solve.

Hey everyone! I've been really geeking out on finding problems that I think could be turned into meaningful businesses. I'm sharing all my ideas here if you're interested. Here's what I've been thinking about lately -

Keeping track of betting lines is a pain

“I love sports betting but it’s hard to keep track of the betting odds on all the different betting apps. I’ve created a spreadsheet and do it manually, but I still need to search through all the sites to get the information. I’d definitely pay for something that did this automatically.” - Anonymous sports better seeking a solution.
Market Background/Opportunity Size:
Changes in sports betting law have created amazing entrepreneurial opportunities! It's like the goldrush here given how young this market is and how quickly things are changing in the US.
On May 14, 2018, the United States supreme court ruled the federal law prohibiting states from authorizing sports betting, protection act PASPA, unconstitutional. It is now up to individual states to decide if they want to authorize and regulate sports betting in their state. 18 states have fully legalized sports betting with 4 more passing bills just this year to legalize it (they aren’t operational yet).
Even though less than half of the US has legalized sports betting, the market cap was sitting pretty at $104.41 billion and expected to reach $155.49 billion by 2024 (this is an estimate, it was tough to nail down). This market is much larger if you include other global players like the UK, Australia, etc… who have already legalized sports betting. It’s clear that trends for this industry are going in the right direction and there’s still a strong opportunity for the first-mover advantage to take place.
Major Players:
Note: there are over 100 sports betting services on the market
The Opportunity:
As mentioned above, there is a huge problem with keeping track of all the different betting lines that exist - resulting in many people (unsuccessfully) using a spreadsheet. Here’s an article that explains why tracking betting lines is important.
The TL;DR is this, placing your bet on a site that has the most favorable odds results in you getting the highest return on that investment. Most people are doing one of these two things:
  1. Nothing. Rather than checking to see where they can get the best returns, they are just using their core betting app and taking the odds they are given. Depending on the bet size, that leaves hundreds of dollars on the table.
  2. Manually tracking the odds each betting site is offering and compiling the odds in a spreadsheet. This results in a lot of time spent switching between sites and transposing numbers.
Current Solutions:
How to Get Your First 10 Customers:
  1. Define Your Early Adopter: Your TAM is anyone who participates in sports betting, but I’d focus your efforts on finding people who acutely experience this pain. People who are spending a lot of time and money on sports betting have the most to lose. More specifically, hunt for people who’ve already created solutions to this problem themselves - like those using homegrown spreadsheets.
  2. Look for CDIs: When looking for channels to find potential users I ask myself “where do my potential customers hang out?”. In this case, I’d look at online communities like Sports Book and Sports Betting subreddits. By simply asking the question, “How do you track betting lines?” you’ll be able to start conversations with potential users about unmet needs.
  3. Create an Online Ad: I’d next test an offer to see if you can acquire potential users to sign up for your service. This can be as simple as creating a landing page (using marketing language from the conversations above) and run a paid ad to your target audience to collect emails.
  4. Build a Wizard of Oz Test: Now that you have a list from running the ad above, I’d see if you can monetize it. Contact people and charge a small fee to run a small wizard of oz test - you could manually pull lines based on the bets they're watching and send it to them in a daily email. Or, there’s likely a no-code tool you could use to scrape the data from existing sites and organize it for them.
I can see a freemium model working for this as well, so you may not need to monetize immediately. One great option would be to charge the bookmakers a fee for every bet you send to their platform.
Challenges:
Additional Opportunities:
There appears to be no shortage of companies trying to become the next big bookmakers. But, there’s plenty of opportunities this burgeoning market has opened up beyond just being a bookie. With this market in its infancy, you can bet (pun 100% intended) that there’s going to be a lot of room to expand your offerings. Whether it be sports betting tips, predictions, tools or even becoming a bookie yourself, there’s money to be made here.
While doing research on this, I found many people are struggling with keeping track of their bets and recording their results. This could be an easy addition to a solution to tracking betting lines. Here’s what some people said -

Looking for a side project idea?

I have finally sat down & listened to all 41 songs for this year, here are my thoughts...

Btw this is going to be a long one!
I'm a long time Eurovision fan from the UK, I've been so busy that I have only just had time to listen to the songs, I've tried to avoid any Eurovision 2020 vlogs/social media to not be biased but I have heard the UK, Russia's and Serbia's entries before binge watching the entries and I was aware that Bulgaria, Iceland and Lithuania seemed to be the favourites.
Also, this is based on my first impression listening to each song once & going off the video that ESC selected for the 2020 playlist (apart from Serbia, I watched the NF not the MV). Also, my opinions may seem harsh and negative but there aren't any songs that I actually hate. I think it's more interesting to comment on what you see as the drawbacks/what would've needed improving than just saying how much I love every song.
Albania - Katy Perry-ish, ok ballad, strong ending
Armenia - Very modern/7 rings, very unique for ESC yet sounds like mainstream UK radio (CapitalXtra)
Australia - Weak vocal, not special, would they have done a 360 like 2019 (I didn't think Zero Gravity was as weak to begin with)
Austria - Carbon Copy of Nobody's Business by Rihanna/Chris Brown, but is different for Austria and I did enjoy it
Azerbaijan - Unexpected chorus yet disappointing? Wonder how the live vocals would've been...
Belarus - Love that it's not in english, weak chorus, very basic choreo
Belgium - I'd like the song more if I knew it wasn't from Belgium, I get 2015 was successful but year after year sending the same dark pop genre is getting boring.
Bulgaria- Cute song, very Billie Eilish (which I don't mind) but idk how I would've felt with Bulgaria winning, knowing that the first thing people would think when listening to the song is Billie, not how great the song is (also they've sent better entries). Also did wish that vocally it did go somewhere in the end.
Croatia - Why do the same thing 2 years in a row, especially when it did not worked the first year (coming from someone who loved Croatia last year)?!
Cyrpus - Very Lose Control by Becky Hill, I do love house music though!
Czech Republic - Disappointing chorus
Denmark- Very P!nk (Walk Me Home), lacked chemistry between singers, was distracted by how Dansk MGP made a stage that looks so similar to ESC 2019!
Estonia,Finland & France - Boring, Boring, Boring but like the mix of French/English
Georgia - I appreciate that it's unique, not for me and very weak lyrically
Germany - lacks emotion/charisma in the MV, wonder what the live vocals would be like..
Greece - Song is great, would have done really well if they were able to sex it up in the chorus (with an older artist) when it comes to staging/choreo but they obviously wouldn't be able to do that since she's 17 and it would be inappropriate
Iceland- Appreciate it not being a ballad, it's not my favourite and would be scared that juries would rank this very low.
Ireland - Cute song, throwback ESC song that this year was missing, very late 00's early 2010s, Stefania should be singing this not a woman in her 30s!
Israel - At the moment, this is my favourite! Was initially disappointed with the 1st half of the chorus then the 2nd half more than makes up for it, wish there were more high notes at the end!
Italy - 4th year in a row sending a male artist and as much as I appreciate Italy always preaching authenticity, I would like for them to change things up and send something more fun/europop and dare I say.. trashy!
Latvia - Unique, can see it being divisive, staging would've determined the outcome for the entry
Lithuania - Cool video I guess.. Is it a winner for me? No
Malta - Her JESC entry was way better, it's good but I expected so much more from Destiny
Moldova - Boring
Netherlands - Boring and sounds like a ballad that every pop star just puts at the end of the album just for the sake of having variety in an album.
North Macedonia - Great voice, they've been hit or miss with staging and this song largely would depend on it!
Norway - Basic ballad
Poland - I feel like juried would love this
Portugal - Pretty song, wish she harmonised with the pianist/backing vocals more
Romania - Beautiful voice but strong accent which shows her weak english
Russia - I wonder who they would've gotten ridden of since they're only allowed 6 on stage, I think they would've won in the same way how Toy won (the hype would've pushed it to win yet would've been unique enough for most who are watching for the first time). Only thing that would stop it winning was the juries.
San Marino - I know disco got them their best result last year but come on...
Serbia - Both blondes vocals can be a little stronger but if Sacha Jean Baptiste did the choreo they were guaranteed Top 10, also I'm guessing Juvederm was sponsoring Serbia this year!
Slovenia - She sounds like she has a blocked nose
Spain - Disappointing chorus, verses are strong
Sweden - The Mamas should've waited until they were missed, I feel like no one is that bothered that they most like aren't coming back! Disappointed that this is what we got after finally not getting a solo male artist for the last 5 years!
Switzerland - One of the better ballads but people are saying it could've won?!?!?!
Ukraine - At first I thought ok Emmelie de Forest! And as much as I appreciate culture and want to like these songs, her voice is grating just like Poland 2019!
UK - Us brits/BBC are way too optimistic, you all said the same thing last year "Finally we have a chance!". BBC would get a backing vocalist to do the high pitch "Breath" bit that would sound awful live! Just like how Finland ruined Saara Aalto with those terrible backing vocalists trying to do the high pitched "I ain't scared no more". Also why would you send another slow ballad, by a white male who look a little similar especially when we came last the year before!
I hope that this doesn't get taken down because I do want to know: what songs am I in complete disagreement with the fandom, who were considered the strong entries, who actually were the bookies favourites, who were the fandom worried about not qualifying but absolutely loved, were countries in danger of losing their qualification records etc...

Jack Johnson. The Original BMF [long]

I meant to post this sooner but life has been kicking my ass lately. The UFC recently had a special event celebrating the sport's “baddest motherfucker" I thought it would be a good opportunity to talk about the (one time) most infamous figure in combat sports. The original bad motherfucker. I hope you enjoy the brief history. If not? Well fuck your opinion; I wrote it on my phone at work.
Jack Johnson
Nature versus nurture; Is a person born great or is greatness something that is believed, conceived, then achieved? Is greatness defined by birth, death, or the period in between? John Arthur Johnson was born the child of former slaves, their third of nine. He was a man of little formal education, a luxury while there was work to be done; there was always work. By the age of sixteen he was providing for himself. A poor colored boy from Galveston, Texas in reconstruction era USA. Many would tell you that the person described above would never become a person bequeathed the title “Great". Those people never asked John Johnson. ”Gentleman Jack” Johnson was a man of many hats; the boxer, the husband, the socialite, and for the majority of his life a somewhat unwilling champion of change.
To know Jack Johnson you must first know the night. The early twentieth century was a very vibrant time in American history. A time of gambling, brothels, and nightclubs. America was home to fixers, grifters, bookies, cowboys, and “good sports". If a person had a good time in mind, they were likely to find themselves in their company. If a person was accepted by this colorful group, they would likely find themselves in the company of Jack Johnson. And here was a man that was hard to miss. listed between everywhere between 6' and 6'4; he towered over the crowd. He had a smile ready for any willing to accept one; to show off his gold-capped teeth (another accessory he popularized) as much as to be amicable. He wore the nicest clothing, drove the fastest cars, and always had a dollar ready for young servers that cross his path. In 1920 he opened “Club Deluxe” a racially inclusive nightclub in downtown Chicago; the first of it’s kind. Well read, easy going, and quick witted; even the most staunch bigot had trouble disliking him after a few drinks with the man .
He took to the nightlife like he was born with a drink in his hand and a woman on his arm but the truth was he was worlds away from his humble beginnings. A young Johnson told half of Galveston that he was going to become a great man. He didn’t know how or when, but he was destined for it. At sixteen he decided on boxing. He had his first bout while working as a longshoremen, he was paid one dollar and fifty cents. Following that; he would fight around the country, relying on the brawling style he claimed to have developed in “battle royals" a Jim Crowe era spectacle where young colored boys were blindfolded and made to fight until one remained.
His wild style served him well until he met Joe Choynski; the first true boxer Johnson would fight. Choynski knocked Johnson out in the third round, and both were promptly arrested as boxing was illegal in Texas at the time. They spent twenty three days in a cell together; in that time Choynski would turn Johnson into the greatest boxer of his era. Bobs, weaves, jabs, feints, stutter-steps, and tie-ups; we’ll never know how much he learned from the veteran, but its safe to say that Johnson left that cell a new boxer.
He would tear through anyone put before him and make them look silly for the effort. In 1903 He won the unofficial “colored" heavyweight championship. He was known by all that followed the pugilistic arts, and many that didn't. The year before he won the unofficial title he fought and embarrassed Jack Jeffries; younger brother of the true heavyweight champion, Jim Jeffries. Forced to address him. “This fellow Johnson is a fair fighter; but he is a black… the title will never go to a black man if I can help it. ” Jeffries was heard to say. This was a tradition that continued after his retirement. Several champions refused to fight Johnson and he wouldn't get his chance to fight for the title until 1908. Johnson followed the champion, Tommy Burns, around the world. Calling for a title bout in New York, London, and Paris. He would be granted his shotband win the title in Australia to the dismay of mainstream society.
The media began to call for a “Great white hope" someone who would return the title to the right hands. Johnson defeated them all. Jim Jeffries himself returned to the ring after a five year layoff; after being offered one hundred and ten thousand dollars and movie rights, over a million dollars (modern day equivalent). The bout was to take place on America’s day; The fourth of July. This fight was unlike any other; gaining attention from the federal government, it was hotly debated as to if it should take place at all. The discontent forced a move from San Francisco CA, to Reno, Nevada two weeks before it was to take place. When the dust settled Johnson remained; the undisputed lineal heavyweight champion of the world. Anywhere the fight film played soon erupted in race riots and lynch mobs.
Congress would use this as its primary cause to ban the distribution of fight film in 1912. Not long after the ban was passed Johnson would be one of the first, and most famous, victims of the newly passed MANN act. A look law passed banning the trafficking of white women for “immoral purposes”. Apparently marriage to a black man was deemed immoral. To the dismay of her family and parts of the country; his wife refused to cooperate and the case was thrown out. He was immediately brought up on new charges, this time for his relationship with a prostitutes spanning from 1909 to 1910. A relationship that concluded before the MANN act was made into law; Johnson responded fleeing the country in 1913.
Johnson would continue to defend the belt until April fifth 1915. He lost the belt to Jesse Willard in a bout boxing historians question to this day. It's correlation with his negotiations for return to the U.S. leaves many questions unanswered. He would reach a deal in 1920 and return to serve his one year sentence. He would not be pardoned until 2018, one hundred and 5 years after his wrongful sentencing. Sadly it took the election of a president with a love combat sports to right this wrong. Jack Johnson was not always a good man; in fact there were several times in his life that he crossed the line going the other direction. He was accused of abusing several women linked to him throughout his life, “fixing" fights (the practice of illegally predetermining a bout’s victor), and perhaps most damning was his own use of color to deny worthy contenders of his own race.
We can all guess as to the contents of his character but Johnson put it best when speaking to an unknown reporter. “[Whatever you write about me, remember I was a man.]” it was a humble moment from a man known to have few; legacy was secondary to him. He was a man obsessed with living life as he saw fit in a world obsessed with his color. His flashy lifestyle put him at odds with leaders of the black community namely Booker T. Washington, the United States government, and even his family. His commitment to being himself has paved the way for competitors and personalities such as Floyd “money” Mayweather, Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, Roy Jones Junior, and any number of fighters unnamed . The most famous boxer of all time, Cassius Clay otherwise known as Muhammad Ali, cites him as a childhood hero. Jack Johnson changed America’s policy and views on race permanently; inside and outside of the boxing ring. Jack Johnson was America’s first celebrity martyr in its own brand of apartheid. Jack Johnson became it’s most famous rebel when he chose to flee the country instead of bowing to oppression. Jack Johnson was the king of the boxing ring for two decades. Jack Johnson was a man.
If you read all that thanks. Stay safe guys.

Revising World Rugby Player of the Year: Part 2 - 2010-2019

World Rugby Player of the Year is the most prestigious individual accolade in the sport but suffice to say it has a history of questionable decisions (to say the least) in regard to previous winners and nominations.
Being the rugby geek I am I have taken the liberty of offering a revised and far more accurate reflection of who should have won and been nominated each year since the awards inception.
I'm unsure why they do many things they do but World Rugby change the number of nominees from four to seven dependent on the year so to maintain consistency I have decided to keep each year to five nominees.
If you missed Part 1 please see link below:
https://www.reddit.com/rugbyunion/comments/drb8a8/revising_world_rugby_player_of_the_year_part_1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x
Let me know if you Agree or Disagree.

2010 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Richie McCaw
Nominees:
Kurtley Beale
Imanol Harinordoquy
Victor Matfield
Mils Muliaina
David Pocock
2010 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Richie McCaw
Nominees:
Kurtley Beale
Victor Matfield
David Pocock
Kieran Read
Verdict: Despite Kieran Read having a breakout season and claiming New Zealand Player of the Year, Richie McCaw was the deserved winner of the award after a fantastic return to form for both himself and the All Blacks.
David Pocock had his first world-class season to announce himself as one of the premier 7s in world rugby, while Kurtley Beale had by far the best season of his career to date, scoring seven tries and proving a handful for every defence he came up against as well as nailing a penalty with the last kick of the match to lift Australia over the Springboks for their first win at altitude in 47 years.
Victor Matfield was a shining light in a dour season for the Springboks and earns his nomination ahead of Harinordoquy and Muliaina.

2011 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Thierry Dusautoir
Nominees:
Will Genia
Jerome Kaino
Ma’a Nonu
David Pocock
Piri Weepu
2011 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Jerome Kaino
Nominees:
Ma’a Nonu
Sean O’Brien
David Pocock
Sam Warburton
Verdict: The greatest injustice in this awards history is Jerome Kaino losing out to Thierry Dusautoir this year. Kaino was the undoubted player of the Rugby World Cup, playing every minute of the All Blacks’ campaign, scoring four tries, making immeasurable attacking contributions, and leaving would-be attackers broken with his shuddering defence.
Dusautoir was awarded the title based on one outstanding test performance – albeit a World Cup final.
Sean O’Brien and Sam Warburton were strong all season but went to a whole other level during the World Cup, to be the pick of the northern hemisphere players at the tournament. They knock Will Genia and Piri Weepu out who were good but there were worthier nominations.

2012 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Dan Carter
Nominees:
Owen Farrell
Richie McCaw
Frederic Michalak
2012 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Richie McCaw
Nominees:
Dan Carter
Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe
Bryan Habana
Kieran Read
Verdict: Two of the oddest nominations in the awards history, Owen Farrell was not even a regular starter for England at the time and Frederic Michalak played only five games for an under-performing French side.
Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe was immense for Argentina during their first year as part of the new Rugby Championship, while Habana had easily his best season since 2007 and in turn was crowned South African Player of the Year.
Read continued to prove himself as the premier No. 8 in world rugby, while Dan Carter had a year worthy of nomination, highlighted by a masterclass against Scotland and kicking the winning drop goal against Ireland, but McCaw was the best player in international rugby this season.

2013 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Kieran Read
Nominees:
Eben Etzebeth
Leigh Halfpenny
Sergio Parisse
Ben Smith
2013 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Kieran Read
Nominees:
Eben Etzebeth
Leigh Halfpenny
Michael Hooper
Ben Smith
Verdict: Despite Leigh Halfpenny’s fantastic season, highlighted by being named both player of the tournament and player of the series during the Welsh Grand Slam of the Six Nations and Lions Tour victory respectively, this was a clearcut decision for Read, who produced one of the most dominant seasons by a player in recent memory.
Ben Smith had his breakout season in international rugby, scoring 11 tries and being consistently sound in all facets of the game. Eben Etzebeth announced himself to the world with a string of intimidating performances while John Eales Medallist as Australian Player of the Year - Michael Hooper was a worthier nomination than Sergio Parisse.

2014 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Brodie Retallick
Nominees:
Wille le Roux
Julian Savea
Jonathan Sexton
Duane Vermuelen
2014 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Brodie Retallick
Nominees:
Michael Hooper
Richie McCaw
Jonathan Sexton
Duane Vermuelen
Verdict: Issue with selections this year are that of Wille le Roux as although he was an attacking marvel for the Springboks during the June Test series he was inconsistent after that and while Savea had his best year in an All Blacks jersey Hooper and McCaw were worthier nominations.

2015 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Dan Carter
Nominees:
Michael Hooper
Greg Laidlaw
David Pocock
Julian Savea
Alun Wyn Jones
2015 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: David Pocock
Nominees:
Dan Carter
Schalk Burger
Richie McCaw
Ma’a Nonu
Verdict: This award could have easily gone one of three ways with Carter, Nonu and Pocock having terrific seasons - but Pocock takes it by the narrowest of margins.
Carter was arguably the best player on the field in his three biggest games of the year (quarter, semi and final), not to mention Bledisloe 2.
Nonu had the best season of his career and scooped New Zealand Player of the Year.
Pocock had a superb season, not even coming close to playing a bad game, with games for the ages against England and Argentina.
Schalk Burger led the World Cup in carries and carries over the gainline, and made the fourth-most tackles in the entire tournament while Richie McCaw played in the fashion he has become renowned for until the very end.

2016 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Beauden Barrett
Nominees:
Dane Coles
Owen Farrell
Maro Itoje
Jamie Heaslip
Billy Vunipola
2016 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Beauden Barrett
Nominees:
Dane Coles
Owen Farrell
Brodie Retallick
Billy Vunipola
Verdict: Retallick comes in for Itoje and Heaslip respectively, Itoje while a worthy winner of the Breakthrough Player of the Year but only played 7 tests throughout the year and was not playing at the level of Retallick who continued to prove himself as the premier lock in world rugby. Heaslip also had a very good year but didn’t do enough to command a position as a Top 5 player.

2017 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Beauden Barrett
Nominees:
Owen Farrell
Israel Folau
Rieko Ioane
Maro Itoje
2017 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Beauden Barrett
Nominees:
Jonathan Davies
Owen Farrell
Conor Murray
Brodie Retallick
Verdict: Davies was the British Lions Player of the Series during their tour of New Zealand and had a career best season as did Murray who asserted himself as the best scrumhalf in international rugby, Retallick continued his form of the past few years and was the pick of the All Blacks players during the Lions series.
Folau had perhaps his best year as a Wallaby, crossing for 12 tries in 10 tests on his way to collecting the John Eales Medal as Australian Player of the Year while Ioane burst onto the international scene with 10 tries in 11 tests and was a worthy recipient of Breakthrough Player of the Year. Itoje continued his imperious form from the year prior to further establish himself as one of the best players in the world but these players overall contributions were not quite as prominent as the others.

2018 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Jonathan Sexton
Nominees:
Beauden Barrett
Faf de Klerk
Rieko Ioane
Malcolm Marx
2018 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Jonathan Sexton
Nominees:
Beauden Barrett
Pieter-Steph du Toit
Tadgh Furlong
Malcolm Marx
Verdict: PSDT won South African Player of the Year and was a more suitable nominee than de Klerk who while spectacular at times, had his cold moments also. Ioane continued to display that he was the best wing in world rugby with 11 tries in as many tests but Furlong redefined the capabilities of a modern day prop and was second to only Sexton as Ireland’s best player in one of/if not the countries greatest season and in turn should have become the first prop to earn a player of the year nomination

2019 World Rugby Player of the Year
Winner: Pieter-Steph du Toit
Nominees:
Tom Curry
Cheslin Kolbe
Ardie Savea
Joe Taufete’e
Alun Wyn Jones
2019 World Rugby Player of the Year (Revised)
Winner: Alun Wyn Jones
Nominees:
Beauden Barrett
Tom Curry
Pieter-Steph du Toit
Ardie Savea
Verdict: Just as I thought World Rugby was getting better with picking the right players along came the Taufete’e nomination…..but I digress, this may be unpopular opinion but I believe AWJ deserved it over PSDT this year. Player of the Six Nations as well as one of the players of the tournament at the world cup, topping the tackle count and inspiring Wales as a leader.
While Kolbe was immense in every game he played, he only played 7 tests and I feel Beauden Barrett was more deserving of a nomination as up until the semi-final against England he was the bookies favourite for Player of the Tournament.

Most Wins and Nominations (Revised)
4 Wins:
Richie McCaw
2 Wins:
Beauden Barrett, Jonny Wilkinson.

11 Nominations:
Richie McCaw
5 Nominations:
Dan Carter
4 Nominations:
Beauden Barrett, Jonny Wilkinson

Fourie du Preez, Bryan Habana, Victor Matfield, Brian O'Driscoll, David Pocock, Kieran Read, Brodie Retallick.

Wimbledon Preview (long)

Hi everyone. I had some time on my hands today so I thought I'd write a summary of the prospects for some big-name players at Wimbledon this year (and some not-so-big names). This is a very long post and I wouldn’t begrudge you just ctrl-F-ing the player you’re interested in. For the big 3 I’ve written more because 1) they're the favourites and 2) they're the players with the most fans, but for those three the second paragraph is more directly about Wimbledon so if you're in a hurry you can just skip to that.
I hope that I can provide either some insight or something that you disagree with that can spark some discussion. I've fallen short of predicting exact rounds where I expect people to go out (partially because the draw hasn't been revealed), but for the record, I do expect the big 3 to make the semis and the fourth spot to be filled by "somebody else".
EDIT: Thanks for the input, have edited some things!
So first, the seeds (should now be in order)

Djokovic: The bookies’ favourite by some margin. Before Wimbledon last year he went from a poor (by his standards) Australian Open to a terrible sunshine double to a lacklustre clay season to a Queen’s final appearance where he was close to winning, so he had some decent momentum going into Wimbledon but it was still the case that an early exit wouldn’t have been surprising given the inconsistency in his form since mid-2016. He showed the world he was back with a 5-set thriller against Nadal and backed it up against Anderson in the final. Since Wimbledon, Djokovic hasn’t looked so invincible as he did in 2011 or 2015/early 2016, losing early in Indian Wells and Miami and, going into the clay season, he looked a little rusty. The momentum looked good after a win in Madrid and a final in Rome, but ultimately he lost at Roland Garros to Thiem in a match which to me showed his mental game wasn’t up to those iron-hard 2015 levels: I particularly refer to his obvious frustration at the windy conditions. There are also question marks about the intensity of his training, as there were some signs of fatigue at points this clay season, especially in the Rome final, which for a player of his fitness is alarming.
On grass, Djokovic’s serve (which is as good as it’s ever been), return and just general tennis prowess will see him make the second week with minimal issues. He would do well to avoid a quarter-final clash with Tsitsipas or Medvedev and would ideally draw Nishikori or Thiem. I don’t see him losing before the quarters at the earliest, with the possible exception of an early round against Kyrgios but he’d still enter that match as a favourite.
Federer: I’m almost surprised he’s not the favourite for the title. Federer’s form last year took a drop after his title win at the Australian Open and lost a match which nobody expected him to lose against Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon, but, discounting Australia, this year so far has been extremely promising for Federer. The swiss reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros after skipping the clay season for the preceding three years and played some sublime attacking-tennis in the process. His Halle victory wasn’t the smoothest, dropping sets along the way, but he made it through and showed everyone that he means business and to expect great things at Wimbledon, which I do.
We all know that Federer’s game is perfect for grass, and despite his age it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that if he’s in form, he’s the favourite in any match on the surface. It would, however, be unfair to neglect the 2014 and 2015 Wimbledon finals. 2015 for me is harder to explain, because honestly his semi-final against Murray is the best I think I’ve ever seen somebody play on a grass court (controversial I know) and it seemed that he just didn’t bring that level against Djokovic two days later. I don’t think we can rely on Federer in the later parts of his career to bring his best level at the most important moments, but given his form this year I don’t see him needing to pull out his best level until the quarters at the very earliest. The biggest danger to Federer at nearly 38 years of age is to play long matches before the semis, and so I think that Federer might actually be more worried to see Zverev or Thiem on the other side of the net than Tsitsipas (I think Federer’s form has improved since Australia and on grass a match between these two would go differently).
Nadal: The last year and a half has been frustrating for Nadal and his fans. Forced to pull out in the Australian Open in 2018, finally making it back to the semis of Wimbledon after 7 years of early exits and with Federer out on the other side of the draw, Nadal had the title in sight but, unfortunately for him, this was the tournament where Djokovic ended his two year slam drought and denied him another non-clay major. An injury at the US Open denied us what could have been a very fun match against Del Potro, and potentially another against Djokovic, but then Nadal came back in the new year with a serve which rivalled his 2010 US Open serve and he swept his way through the tournament only to look flat in the final against a Djokovic who himself looked totally in control. Injuries took their toll on his mental game too, and Nadal’s performance in the clay season was one of his worst. In Rome he looked merciless, however, and at Roland Garros he once against lifted the trophy, weathering the storm against Thiem in the early sets and brutalising him in the last two. Interesting to note that for the clay season, Nadal seemed to revert to his old serve rather than his improved serve he used in Australia.
If he is able to use the faster, flatter serve on grass (and crucially if it holds up under pressure), then this should at the very least help him to avoid an upset against a big server along the vain of Gilles Mueller or Nick Kyrgios early on. If we look at people to beat Nadal on grass in recent years, they’ve mostly been lower percentage players with strong serves. Cilic when he’s playing well has exactly the kind of serve to trouble Nadal, but Cilic’s form has been questionable since Queen’s 2018, so people to watch out for in a Nadal draw are Kyrgios, Lopez and Khachanov.
Anderson: I’m not sure if Kevin can give his best so soon after an injury come back and consequently I don’t think he’ll make the quarters and I’d be really very surprised indeed if he made the semis here given his performance at Queen’s Club and the fact that there are some dangerous players floating around the draw. Anderson made two major finals in a year and I think that they will go down as the highlights of a really solid career for him.
Thiem: I maintain that we haven’t really had a chance to see how good Thiem is on grass since he’s improved his hardcourt game. He won Stuttgart in 2016 and made the fourth round in 2017 where he took two sets off Berdych (who played well that year). Last year Thiem didn’t really have a grass season to speak of and retired in R1 of Wimbledon, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he played well at Wimbledon and made a quarter-final, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if he to somebody like Dimitrov in round 1, so manage expectations if you’re a Thiem fan but there’s some potential there.
Zverev: His form this year hasn’t been great but if he brings his best serve then he can make a run here. Could see him finally making the semis if he’s in Anderson’s quarter, for example, but I don’t see him beating the big 3 here.
Tsitsipas: I’m a little surprised by his performance this grass season and the defeatist attitude he displayed after the loss to young Auger-Aliassime (https://www.atptour.com/en/news/tsitsipas-praises-auger-aliassime-queens-club-2019). I wonder if the tight loss to Wawrinka in Paris might have set him back a bit mentally. Tsitsipas isn’t a lock to make a deep run here, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him bow out before the quarters to a player like Berrettini, Mannarino or the man himself: Medvedev. He’s one to watch out for though, because if he’s playing well then he can definitely challenge anyone so keep an eye out for how he does in his early matches.
Nishikori: He’s made four quarter-finals or better in the last year, so it would be silly to rule him out of doing it again. Solid player, unlikely to cause an upset in my opinion.
Isner: If Isner is playing (is he?) then a lot of what I said about Anderson applies to him as well. Not somebody that most players want to face, but his prospects for the tournament probably aren’t great after an injury.
Khachanov: He’s a dark horse for me. His serve is good for grass and he could be dangerous despite a shaky start to the year. Don’t expect a deep run necessarily but he’s one to watch out for.
Medvedev: I haven’t really figured out yet how well his game is suited for grass. Before April he’d never won a match on clay and then he went and had a great clay season, but I’m not sure whether his flat shots and the angle he can get on the serve makes up for his relatively poor movement and net game on grass.
Fognini: He made the third round of Wimbledon the last couple of years and I think that’s about the best he can expect on this surface, unfortunately it doesn’t suit him.
Cilic: Out of form, expect an exit in the first three rounds but still dangerous and he’s shown champion mentality before so nothing is certain.
Coric: Unlikely to cause an upset, expect him to make around round 4.
Raonic: Question mark over his health but obviously a big threat if healthy and in form.
Monfils: Not somebody you want to play but also not likely to make it deep.
Berrettini: If the player you are supporting has to play this guy, you should be a little worried because he’s stormed through the rankings in the last 3 months. He will get the 16th seed if Isner (or anyone else above him) withdraws from the tournament.
Basilashvili: Quite a dangerous player on some surfaces but I’m not sure if grass is one of them. I don’t think the top seeds will be worried if Basilashvili is their first projected seeded opponent.
Auger-Aliassime: He’s proven himself but has yet to complete a best of five match. I don’t think he’s a threat to the big 3 yet if I’m honest, he’s not achieved the consistency and confidence in his serve and ground strokes yet and I think against those players who he grew up watching dominate the tour the pressure might cause the cracks to show in his game. I say this because he’s made a lot of deep runs and then fallen to players who weren’t necessarily playing any better than people he beat earlier in the week and that a plausible explanation is that it’s because of the pressure of being close to winning the tournament. That’s just my own speculation of course.
Simon: What an impressive week he had last week. I don’t expect him to back it up at Wimbledon, unfortunately, and I think making the second week is a very unlikely prospect for him given the infrequency this has happened in his career and the competitive nature of the slams.
Goffin: Goffin is such a fascinating player. When you see the scores of matches he plays, he’ll often bagel his opponent then lose the next set or lose the match. He has a really high peak level but you can’t help but think that there’s a reason he hasn’t made it to the quarter-finals of a major more than twice despite being 28 years old. His run at Halle was good though and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him in a quarter-final or even a semi if he’s in Anderson’s quarter. I wouldn’t hold my breath for it though.
Wawrinka: Not a natural grass player, he’s never found moving on the surface easy. He has made two quarter-finals at Wimbledon (2014 and 2015) though unlikely to repeat that again this year I think, but he’s an amazing player so anything is possible.
Bautista-Agut: I was really surprised he took a set off Federer at Halle, and I didn’t see the match so I don’t know the story, but he played great on hard this year so entirely possible he makes the fourth round or so again.
Schwartzman: Great player, just not on grass. He’s never shown anything remarkable on grass as far as I’m aware, and I don’t think this will be the year that this changes.
De Minaur: He’s very fast which is nice on grass, but I lacks some weapons to cause damage. Again, round 3 or is the bound I’m placing on him in this tournament
Pella: His victory of Cilic last year wasn’t a sign that he’s good on grass so much as a sign of Cilic’s drop in consistency, I think. Pella is great on clay but not suited to grass.
Pouille: I won’t lie, I think the Australian Open semi was a fluke for him given his form in the last year. He’s had some strong seasons before and I know he’s made two major quarters before but I can’t in good faith say that he’s likely to make a deep run given he’s only made one quarter final or better since the Australian Open (aside from a challenger he won on clay) and that was in Stuttgart. I do think, however, that he’s a dangerous person to draw for a lot of players, though probably not for the big 3.
Paire: Seems to have upped his consistency over the last couple of years. Could be an early(ish) threat to a big name with his brilliant drop-shots.
Shapovalov: Seems to have been relatively static in his development over the last year or so, I don’t think grass suits his game actually either (he takes big swings and isn’t great at taking the ball on the rise). I don’t see a run here.
Edmund: Home crowd advantage is nice and he took a set off Djokovic last year. Dangerous opponent early on perhaps in third round or so, but, quite unpredictable how well he will do and he’s had a poor year so don’t expect much (80 in the race to London)
Djere & Lajovic: Included because they’re seeded but they really are unlikely to make any noise this tournament.

And now for some unseeded players:

Mannarino: Another players who I think has a good chance of making the fourth round but isn’t likely to go beyond that. He’s a good grass player but he’s not so much of a threat to the higher seeds I think.
Lopez: Had one of the best weeks of his career last week. In 2017 when he won the singles at Queen’s Club he retired in his first round match at Wimbledon. How well he might have done otherwise we will never know, but I Feliciano Lopez is a really good grass court player and a threat to anyone he plays. He’s made the quarters at Wimbledon three times as well, so entirely possible he matches that.
Struff: He’s been playing well recently and his big serve should help him on grass. I categorise him as a threat, but not a contender to go deep.
Herbert: The man with the crazy service motion and the man who will be playing doubles with Andy Murray. He’s a good grass player and maybe Murray’s energy will help him, but I see him losing to the first other seeded opponent he plays.
Tiafoe: He made the third round last year in a five-setter against Khachanov. Definitely could make a run but don’t see him beating a top 10 player.
Kyrgios: Probably the most dangerous first round opponent you could ask for, his form at the moment hasn’t been good so don’t expect this to be the tournament where he turns things around but do expect that if he gets a top 10 player he will do everything he can to make it hell for them and possibly pull an upset.
Querrey: Seems to have disappeared a bit over the last couple of years, but he’s playing Eastbourne so I assume he’s playing Wimbledon too. It would be surprising if he brought form like he did in 2016 or 2017, but he’s a dangerous player on grass so has some limited upset potential.
Gasquet: Gone is the possibility of Gasquet making another semi-final at a major but for some players he could be dangerous. For others, like Nadal, he’s the perfect opponent though.
Verdasco: Had a pretty decent clay season, beating Thiem in Rome, has made a quarter before but I don’t expect a deep run. Included him for the upset potential in round 1.
Evans: Won a challenger in Nottingham and has some good game and that lovely home-crowd advantage. Dangerous early round opponent.
Dimitrov: He’s obviously a dangerous opponent when he’s playing well, but he isn’t playing that well this year. Honestly he’s still one of the more dangerous round 1 opponents though despite this, and being in the hallowed grounds of the All-England Club might spark some fire in him.
Norrie: The last of the three British players is Cameron Norrie, a very decent young player who has the potential to cause an upset with a good lefty serve and forehand and that ever-powerful crowd support.
Tsonga: Has obviously achieved some great things in the past, including on grass, and recently took Federer close at Halle. Players will definitely want to avoid an early round clash with him.
Baghdatis: Players have a habit of doing well when they know it’s their last chance, and I expect him to play a five-setter against somebody. Hoping that Marcos can show us some magic once more before he retires.

Hope you enjoyed!

Game Week 3 Preview

Friday 4th April

Belshina Bobruisk v Gorodeya - 17:00 GMT +3 (15:00 BST, 10:00 EDT)
Last year H2H: none.
Both teams had struggles in first two matches, that led to 15th and 16th places of the table. Will Gorodeya score its first goal? Or will Belshina win for the first time in 5 matches, including frendlies?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 2,73, X - 3,00, 2 - 2,90
Dinamo Minsk v Torpedo-BelAZ Zhodino - 19:00 GMT +3 (17:00 BST, 12:00 EDT)
Last year H2H: 0:3, 0:4.
Most experts expected the situation to be turned upside-down from what it looks like now. Torpedo seemed to be at the bottom, while Dinamo was expected to be at the top. But we see that Torpedo has 100% of possible points, while Dinamo has 0%. Will Dinamo break its ever-worst streak of 6 consecutive losses? Or will Torpedo continue to surprize everyone?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 2,10, X - 3,10, 2 - 3,30

Saturday 5th April

Shakhtyor Soligorsk v Neman Grodno - 15:30 GMT +3 (13:30 BST, 8:30 EDT)
Last year H2H: 6:0, 3:0.
After lost Supercup, than won Cup 1/4, Shakhtyor continues to be unstable with a loss and a win. Neman cannot score against Shakhtyor since 2017. Will we see a finish of that serie?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 1,40, X - 4,00, 2 - 7,50
BATE Borisov v Rukh Brest - 17:30 GMT +3 (15:30 BST, 10:30 EDT)
Last year H2H: none.
On paper, there is nothing to decide in this match. But BATE have shown us that they can cause whemselves troubles with undoubtedly weaker teams. Will BATE shock the public with another one tough loss? Or will Rukh be destroyed on the field by angry BATE players?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 1,33, X - 5,25, 2 - 8,00
Dynamo Brest v Slavia Mozyr - 19:30 GMT +3 (17:30 BST, 12:30 EDT)
Last year H2H: 0:0, 4:2.
After winning the championship title last year, Brest don't show as spectacular game as they showed us last year. Will they show class this time? Or will Slavia make another sensation by winning another contender?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 1,33, X - 4,50, 2 - 9,00

Sunday 6th April

Energetik-BGU Minsk v Minsk - 14:00 (12:00 BST, 7:00 EDT)
Last year H2H: 3:3, 6:1.
Both club focus on finding young talents, Shkurin of Energetik even scored 19 times last year, and left the club to join CSKA Moscow this winter. Now Energetik have shown that they have compensated all the losses and found new gems, having a 100% run. Teams who fought in relegation battle last year, are now at places 1 and 2. Whose youngsters are the best?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 3,20, X - 3,10, 2 - 2,20
Vitebsk v Smolevichi - 16:00 (14:00 BST, 9:00 EDT)
Last year H2H: none.
This is Smolevichi's second try to stay in the top tier of Belarusian football. After 4th place in 2018, Vitebsk have fallen to 12th in 2019. Now they face the 12th team of the table, while standing at the 11th place. Will Smolevichi get their first victory of the season? Or will Vitebsk show that they deserve more than 11th place?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 2,29, X - 3,10, 2 - 3,00
Isloch Minsk Region v Slutsk - 18:00 (16:00 BST, 11:00 EDT, 2 AM Melbourne Time)
Last year H2H: 3:1, 1:0.
Slutsk, because of its name, is one of the most popular Belarusian teams right now with big fan community in Australia. Unfortunately, for this sugar team life is not sweet at all. The club stays two steps away from bankruptcy. While Isloch doesn't have big budget too, they managed to almost reach the goal of last season - 50 points. With 48, they've finished 5th. Will Isloch win third in a row with 1:0? Will Slutsk actually deliever some fun for their worldwide community?
What do the bookies say? 1 - 1,70, X - 3,40, 2 - 4,75
